Remembering Whitney

On Saturday night the music world was stunned by the death of Whitney Houston.

Whitney Houston, who reigned as pop music’s queen until her majestic voice and image were ravaged by drug use, erratic behaviour and a tumultuous marriage to singer Bobby Brown, died Saturday night. She was 48.

At her peak, Houston was the golden girl of the music industry. From the middle 1980s to the late 1990s, she was one of the world’s best-selling artists. Her success carried her beyond music to movies, where she starred in hits like “The Bodyguard” and “Waiting to Exhale.”She influenced a generation of younger singers, from Christina Aguilera to Mariah Carey. But by the end of her career, Houston became a stunning cautionary tale of the toll of drug use. Her album sales plummeted and the hits stopped coming; her once pristine image was shattered. She confessed to abusing cocaine, marijuana and pills, and her once stunning voice became raspy and hoarse, unable to hit the high notes as she had during her prime.

It was a tragic fall for a superstar who was one of the top-selling artists in pop music history, with more than 55 million records sold in the United States alone.

Houston’s death on the eve of the Grammy Awards sent shock waves through the music industry, with many stars expressing surprise and sadness.

Bobby Brown reportedly broke down backstage before a show with his band New Edition; he skipped the first song of the concert, but appeared onstage for the second. He shouted, “I love you, Whitney. The hardest thing for me to do is to come on this stage.” He then blew a kiss to the sky with visibly teary eyes.

Houston’s long time mentor Clive Davis held his annual concert and dinner Saturday at the hotel where her body was found. Producer Jimmy Jam, who had worked with Houston, said he anticipated the evening would become a tribute to her.

Aretha Franklin, her godmother, also said she was stunned.”I just can’t talk about it now,” Franklin said in a short statement. “It’s so stunning and unbelievable. I couldn’t believe what I was reading coming across the TV screen.”

Jennifer Hudson performed an extremely moving tribute to Houston at the Grammy Awards, Grammy executive producer Ken Erhlich said event organizers believed Hudson could perform a “respectful musical tribute” to Houston. The Dreamgirls actress had less than 24 hours to prepare for her rendition of Houston’s I Will Always Love You at the Grammy Awards on Sunday. The American Idol graduate stood under a single spotlight as she belted out what is largely considered Houston’s most famous hit which was written by Dolly Parton for The Bodyguard soundtrack. Throughout her moving performance Hudson appeared to be fighting back the tears but managed to remain composed right thorough to the end.

RIP Whitney.

Victoria Beckham New York Fashion Week

Victoria Beckham kicked off the fourth day of  New York Fashion Week at the New York Public Library.

Any doubt about her credibility as a fashion design was quickly erased by this collection of well-made clothes that any woman would want to wear. The dresses were figure flattering with references to athletic wear and to military. These were all in shapes that would flatter anyone that wore them. A bonus at the show was the appearance of David Beckham who sat next to Anna Wintour, he arrived looking dapper as ever and carrying Harper who was sporting a baby beanie to protect her from the cold. Victoria was later heard speaking about her daughter saying she is already a great fan of fashion and how nice it is to finally have someone to share it with at home.

Versace for H&M

After an amazing success in November Versace decided to collaborate with H&M once again with a collection this time made up of cruise wear. The Cruise 2012 collection launched exclusively online in the UK yesterday and sold out almost immediately. The H&M Web site crashed at 6:30 a.m, H&M UK tweeted: “We’re very sorry for the tech problems during today’s #VersaceforHM launch. We’re working on expanding capacity for more visitors.”

H&M then sent out an official statement

“We apologize to all the customers who experienced technical problems when trying to shop online. Due to the high volume of customers shopping the Versace Cruise collection our website was down for a few hours. We have been working hard to solve the technical problems that occurred to avoid that this will happen again in the future. We of course hope that as many customers as possible had the possibility to shop. This is a limited, one off collection which is supposed to sell out in a couple of days, but the interest from our customers highly exceeded anything we could have expected.”

Versace fans do not need to worry; items from the Versace H&M Cruise 2012 collection are now available on eBay for your purchasing pleasure however this comes at a cost as the prices have shot up almost four times the original price tag. The most-coveted items include the fruit printed dresses, tops and heels.

This new collection titled the ‘Cruise’ collection see’s a lot of pastels, gold accessories and fruity prints. Women’s wear includes camisoles, blouses, white jeans, belts, flowing caftans, fruity bikinis, gold stiletto sandals and charm bracelets. Menswear includes blazers, brightly hued T-shirts, pleated shorts and a lavish bathrobe.

The retro 50s vibe of the Cruise 2012 line is a striking contrast to the Fall 2011 collection that was founded on 90s sexy decadence. The collection is Donatella Versace’s second and final line for H&M.
